During the first episode of Bachelor in Paradise, Burnett revealed that she had been "casually dating a woman". The woman, Kristian Haggerty, made a surprise appearance on the show and ended up joining it to continue her relationship on screen with Burnett in Bachelor in Paradise. This would mark the couple as the franchise's first homosexual on-air relationship. During the season finale, Burnett and Haggerty ended up engaged. In September 2019, Burnett made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she stated that she was afraid to come out not just on national television, but also to people she knew in real life. Why Did Burnett’s Mother Go To Prison?

Tina Jean Jordan, Burnett’s mom, was incarcerated for 18 months at FMC Carswell Federal Prison in Texas for conspiracy to commit bank fraud. This wasn’t the first time she ran in with the law.

During an early episode of The Bachelors, Burnett was filmed having a conversation with her mother, who was serving time in jail for this felony at the time of the call. In the premiere of the 23rd season of The Bachelor, Demi got a call that began with “this call is from a federal prison.” She proceeded to chat with Tina regarding her release date.

According to a report by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBP), Jordan was released on 23rd November 2018, which was shortly after The Bachelor finished filming. She was sentenced to 18 months at FMC Carswell prison in Texas on 24th July 2017, however, she was allowed to spend the last six months of her sentence in a halfway house, as reported by Life & Style.

According to another report by Life & Style, Jordan served time in prison back in 2007 for embezzlement, as well as a slew of other charges over the years, which included violating her probation, committing grand theft, and committing forgery.

Jordan also filed for bankruptcy in New Mexico in 2000.

Burnett’s Relationship with her mother

After Burnett spoke with her mother about her release date she told the cameras that her mom is “actually going to get out very soon”. She hoped that the next time she saw her would be with Colton Underwood, the season’s bachelor. She also shared her mother’s imprisonment with Underwood and says that, although her mother might be “messed up,” she loves her very much.

Criticism of Tina’s Imprisonment

Burnett made a statement to US Weekly that many of her “haters” had been trying to hurt her by saying she would end up in prison like her mom. She claimed that though she had received a huge amount of support, some people had tried to put her down by making statements about her mother's imprisonment. She says that such things didn't faze her at all.

She continued to claim that the reason haters say that is just because she’s scandalous. She reported that a lot of people came out and thanked her for speaking up. She claims that people are grateful to her saying, ”I have a parent in prison too and nobody ever talks about it or understands it”.

Imprisonment for the Third time

Burnett says that after she was on The Bachelor, her mother ended up going back to prison for a third time for violating probation or failing a drug test. Jordan was scheduled to be released in May 2020.

Burnett’s Childhood

While appearing on the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast (hosted by former Bachelor Nation stars Ben Higgins and Ashley Iaconetti), Burnett opened up about her unstable relationship with her mother. The latter has been in and out of prison since she was a kid.

She called her childhood "interesting" saying that she never really talked about it. Her father was a single dad after her mother moved away. She calls him a fantastic father who was always taking care of his children. Her mother Tina was always "somewhere out there."

She continued saying that growing up her life and relationship with her mother was never stable. She added that they never knew when they were going to see her.

Burnett says that the family never knew what was going on with her mother. Her mother Tina was heavily involved with drugs; as Burnett said, she was "messed up on men."

Burnett was still very young when her mother went to prison for the first time. Her father tried to keep the truth from her and didn’t exactly tell her what was going on at the time.

She went on to call herself a "super adorable little blonde girl" that was always running around. She believes that the story of her mother going to prison was probably the last thing her father wanted to tell her.
