Minimum, Medium, and Maximum Security Level Prisons in Illinois

The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) is the primary department set up by the government of Illinois in order to run the state prisons. Its headquarters are located in Springfield. A director who is appointed by the government of Illinois is given the responsibility for the smooth functioning of the state prisons.

The incarceration rate in Illinois is 497 per 100,000 people. As per PrisonPolicy.org's Correctional Control Report of 2018, a total of 76,000 people from Illinois are locked up behind bars.

Security Levels at Illinois Department of Correction:

By using a three-level security designation system, IDOC performs the initial classification of inmates at one of the reception facilities located across the state. Classification of each inmate is reviewed periodically in their assigned facilities. There are three primary points of data that are used at IDOC to do the initial classification of the inmates.

Security Levels:

There are mainly three security levels assigned to facilities. These are Minimum, Medium, and Maximum. There can be further division of Minimum and Medium level prisons into multiple levels of security. There are several factors considered when giving a security level to a prison.

Offender Grades:

In order to maintain discipline at the facilities, there are offender grades assigned to the inmates. Initially, all the offenders are assigned the grade A. Grade B is assigned to the prisoners who were demoted to Grade C from B, and now they're being moved back to A. Grade C involves some limitations and restrictions like the phone usage, etc.

Escape Risk Level:

The Escape Risk is calculated through a designed system that helps determine how likely is it for an inmate to attempt escaping. There are many factors involved in predicting the escape risk level of prisoners, for example, the crime they are convicted for, their escape history, criminal history, and their outstanding warrants.
