Different Levels of Prisons In the State of Missouri / Level 1, level 2, level 3, level 4, level 5 prisons in the State of Missouri

Missouri, the 19th most populous state in the US, operates over 21 state prisons run and administered by the Missouri Department of Corrections (MDOC). Unlike other US states, Missouri also has a higher number of prisons than any other democracy in the world. According to the data revealed by the Prison Policy Initiative, Missouri locks up 735 per 100,000 people, which is a higher percentage than any other democracy in the world.

Similar to other states, Prisons in Missouri are divided into State prisons, County Jails, and Federal Prisons. Depending upon the nature of a person’s crime, they are locked up likewise and have to serve in a similar facility.

What is the difference between Missouri State Prisons and County Jails?

Similar to the case in other states, the county jails in Missouri are operated by the state’s sheriff’s office and administered by the Missouri Department of Corrections MDOC, which comes under the state government of Missouri. The number of county jails is much higher in Missouri, where the majority of the prisoners are those who have committed violent crimes. In contrast, the minority are those with minor offenses.

Whereas state prisons are those that are operated by MDOC directly. The prisoners in state prisons are convicted of their crimes in a state court. Unfortunately, the recidivism rate in Missouri is the highest, standing around 28.7% in 2022, meaning over 1 in 3 prisoners will be rearrested within three years of their release.

This has made MDOC come under severe criticism regarding their correctional programs. However, MDOC has assured us it is doing everything to ensure prisoners are given US standards education and disciplinary courses during their time in prison.

Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, and Level 5 prisons in Missouri:

As per United States prison classification standards, Missouri does not have security standards divided into level 1, level 2, level 3, level 4, and level 5. Instead, as per the Missouri state records, the state prisons are divided into three classifications: minimum, medium, and maximum.

The following is what each classification stands for:

  • Minimum: Minimum security standard prisons are those where prisoners are stationed who are undergoing either a trial and have not been convicted or are those who have to serve a small sentence for a non-violent sentence.
  • Medium: Medium security standard prisons are those where prisoners have committed a violent crime and have to undergo corrective courses and serve their sentence for the offense they have committed.
  • Maximum: Maximum security prisons are those where most violent prisoners are stationed, some of whom are on death row. Maximum security prisons are well guarded by MDOC and have several high-standard correctional programs to ensure violent prisoners are rehabilitated into society once they serve their sentences.
