6. Women's Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center, Vandalia

Built on 184 acres and surrounded by fencing with razor ribbon, the Women's Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC) in Missouri was the first major facility built to replace the aging Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka, Alabama.

Rachel Staudt was sentenced to life in prison for spiking her family's drinks with antifreeze, resulting in the deaths of her father and brother and debilitating brain damage for her sister.
