The use of private prisons in Colorado has been proven disputed. Critics claim that private prisons have greater rates of violence, below-average levels of healthcare, and lower quality of care than state prisons. They further say that private prisons offer a monetary incentive for the state to imprison more individuals, even if it is not required.

Private prisons' proponents believe they are less inefficient and cost-effective than public prisons. They further believe that private prisons allow the state more freedom in regulating its penal system. However, there still is uncertainty about the future of private prisons in Colorado.

In 2022, the Colorado Department of Correction declared that it would not renew its contract with the private organization CoreCivic. It means that the future of Bent County Correctional Facility and Crowley County Correctional Facility is still uncertain, as CoreCivic administers these two facilities.

Due to monetary constraints, the CDC might use private prisons in the future. Meanwhile, there are chances that it completely phases out private prisons in the state of Colorado.
