Community Corrections

Prison levels classification-West Virginia State

The offenders are shifted to a housing facility after the reception. Inmates are assigned to a specific custody level based on how much risk they can cause to the community, staff, or other inmates.

The system encourages inmates to improve their conduct and perform better in vocational activities so that they can move to less restricted facilities.

Inmates are assigned the following custody levels in WVDOCR.

Level 1 Prison-Community

This one offers the least restrictive custody care. Level 1 poisoners are qualified to be housed in community programs or on supervised probation.

Level 2 Prison-Minimum Custody

An inmate's level of custody allows them to move around the facility more freely. Level 2 inmates are eligible for pretrial diversion consideration and may be considered for crew work.

Level 3 Prison-Medium Custody

Level 3 prisoners are given less freedom than level 2 offenders.

Level 4 Prison-Close Custody

Level 4 custody inmates are those kept in the Behavior Improvement Unit or on Special Management Status (Protective Custody).

Level 5 Prison-Maximum Custody

Level 5 Prisoners are those who are ineligible for release or parole. Also, those who are housed in administrative segregation,  and detention units are considered to be under Level 5 custody.

Denmar Correctional Center and Jail

Denmark is a medium security facility, located in Pocahontas County with a capacity of 235 male inmates. Initially, it served as a facility for tuberculosis patients until 1990, which was then converted into a DCC prison in 1993.

Eastern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility

The facility is located in Martinsburg and was operated in 1999. The correctional center serves inmates in three counties, Berkeley, Jefferson, & Morgan.

Central Regional Jail and Correctional Facility

The facility is located in Braxton County and was operated on February 22, 1993.

Huttonsville Correctional Center and Jail

Huttonsville houses male offenders in close custody. The center was created in 1937 in Randolph County to manage the inmate population of WV State Penitentiary.  It is one of the oldest state prisons in West Virginia with a capacity to confine 1,186 state inmates.

Lakin Correctional Center and Jail

LCC is a female intake facility, as well as houses females of all custody levels. Located in Mason County, LCC is the only prison that accommodates state female inmates. The facility was operated on January 29, 2003, with a capacity to hold 543 convicts.

Martinsburg Correctional Center and Jail

Serves as an intake facility for males. It is located in Berkeley County and has 120 beds. It also serves as a unit where male offenders are assigned specific custody levels.

McDowell County Corrections [External Site]

This agency is affiliated with WVDOCR and offers confinement for the minimum to medium-level custody inmates. It was previously known as the Welch facility and opened in 1976.

Mount Olive Correctional Complex and Jail

Mount Olive Correctional unit houses male inmates of maximum custody level. Inmates that can pose high risks to the community and need exceptional security and supervision along with medical treatment for their well-being are kept here.

North Central Regional Jail and Correctional Facility

Operated in August of 2001, NCR is located in Doddridge County. The facility serves inmates of Doddridge, Harrison, Marion, Monongalia, Ritchie, Tyler, and Wood Counties.

Northern Correctional Facility

The correctional unit serves male inmates in close custody and maintains the general population. It serves 5 counties and is located in Marshall County.

Northern Regional Jail

Located in Marshall County near Northern Correctional Facility.

Ohio County Correctional Center and Jail

Minimum custody male inmates of WVDOCR are kept in the Ohio County Correctional Unit. The facility was built in 1974 and served as a jail until 1994. However, it was closed the same year and it served as a leasing unit later in 1998. The facility houses male technical parole violators.

Potomac Highlands Regional Jail and Correctional Facility

Located in Hampshire County and serves offenders of Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral, and Pendleton Counties.

Pruntytown Correctional Center and Jail

Previously served as a juvenile detention facility until 1983. PCC was operated in 1985 and is a medium-male facility, located in Taylor County. The center can house 369 inmates, whose primary work was to revamp the facility.

Saint Marys Correctional Center and Jail

The St.Marys correctional center located in Pleasants County houses male inmates. SMCC is a medium-security state prison, established in 1932. The daily inmate count of SMCC is 610.

Salem Correctional Center and Jail

It is a medium security facility for male offenders located in Harrison County.

South Central Regional Jail and Correctional Facility

The facility was operated in 1993 and had the state's only Forensic Evaluation center within it.

Southern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility

Built-in 1994, SRJC accommodates inmates of seven different counties in the southeastern region.

Southwestern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility

The correctional center has been serving inmates since 1998 in four different counties; Boone, Logan, McDowell, and Mingo.

Tygart Valley Regional Jail and Correctional Facility

Western Regional Jail and Correctional Facility

Cabell County is where the Western correctional center is located. The facility has been in operation since December 2003.

Anthony Correctional Center

The correctional community houses male and female inmates of age 18 to 25. The confinement period for these offenders varies between 6 months to 2 years.

Beckley Correctional Center and Jail

The facility was revamped in 1997 and was created in 1974. It has a capacity of 137 inmates and contains a Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Unit.

Charleston Correctional Center and Jail

The community correctional center was operated in 20215 with a 96-bed co-educational work release unit. It also contains a Residential Substance Abuse Unit with 32 female inmates capacity.

Parkersburg Correctional Center and Jail

Parkersburg Correctional Center and Jail have an inmate capacity of 130 males. PCC inmates are those who have been qualified to participate in work release programs
