With an incarceration rate of 795 per 100,000 people, Florida stays well above any other democratic country in the world in terms of the percentage of locking up its people. As per PrisonPolicy.org's Correctional Control Report of 2018, A total of 176,000 people from Florida are in some form of jail across the state.

The Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) is responsible for operating state prisons across Florida. The FDC is known to be the third-largest system of state prisons in the entire USA.

Classification of Inmates at Florida Department of Corrections:

Classification of inmates by the department is a vital step in housing them appropriately. All the offenders come to prison for committing different kinds of crimes. Therefore, they are not housed in the same prisons. FDC has a defined process that an offender needs to go through before being assigned to a particular prison.

Upon arrival at FDC, the inmates are sent to any one of the six reception centers for a period of three to four weeks. Here, the purpose is to select an appropriate facility placement through the assessment of the characteristics of offenders. It helps determine the security level and health care that needs to be provided to inmates.

The security requirements may include the custody level of inmates and identification of some specific people with whom the inmates should not be in contact, for example, gang affiliates. Other factors that are considered while placement could include education, programmatic, and health of the inmates. After that, the inmates are sent to facilities capable of accomodating these requirements and needs.

A very important determinant of the inmates' placement is the custody level assigned to them. It helps determine the security level to be provided to inmates. Initially, the custody levels are assigned by the reception officers who use a computer-based algorithm as well as interviews to determine the best-suited facility and housing for the inmates, based on the risk they may possess or chances of them being involved in serious and repeated misconduct while being incarcerated.

The criteria that finalises the inmates' classification includes the current offence, criminal history, affiliation with the gangs, and sentence. The custody level assigned is not fixed and it may change while the inmate is incarcerated. It may result in the transfer of inmates to another facility.
