Georgia has 986 out of 100,000 people behind the bars. Just like New Mexico, Georgia incarcerates a higher percentage of its population than any other democratic country in the world. According to PrisonPolicy.org's Correctional Control Report of 2018, there are 102,000 people locked up in some form of jail in Georgia, which is quite a lot of people.

The Georgia Department of Corrections has one of the largest prison systems in the USA. It supervises 52,000 state prisoners. Moreover, GDC's employee count is approximately 10,500, which makes it the largest law enforcement agency in the entire state. Its headquarter is based in Forsyth, on a former campus of Tift College.

Classification of Inmates at The Georgia Department of Corrections:

Both females and male inmates go through a similar diagnostic and classification process at GDC. However, a few steps differentiate in both genders' classification process. Offenders who do not have any serious mental or medical health-related issues, complete the entire process somewhere between 7-1o days. Step by step classification process is as follows:

Day 1:

Both male and female inmates go through a medical screening on the first day where after a few important tests like blood tests and TB tests, they are given essential items like clothing and ID card.

In addition to that, inmates are screened for any mental health issues on the first day. After a whole process of medical screening, they are provided Housing/bed.

Day 2:

On day 2, there are some initial interviews along with reading and IQ tests. After orientation, Diagnostic handbooks may be distributed among female inmates. Moreover, both male and female inmates are informed about Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) through video orientation.

Days 3 and 4:

For the male prisoners, days 3 and 4 are reserved for the awaiting medical reports and there may be some further medical evaluations. For female inmates, there are pre-parole interviews and some medical exams scheduled.

Days 5 and 6:

On day 5, for male inmates, a physical examination, and DNA/dental examination, chest x-rays are performed. Then, handwritten medical reports are taken to the medical records to be added to the record later. The entire day 6 is reserved for entering the male inmates' profiles.

For female prisoners, day 5, as well as day 6, are reserved for the diagnostic tests which include a culture fair (IQ) and an academic test which includes reading, maths, and spelling.

Day 7:

On day 7, the male inmates are interviewed to collect self-reports and a personal history statement may also be entered on the same day. In addition to that, male prisoners are interviewed for the final time on day 7. It is assumed that the case plan is completed on the same day. By the end of this day, the inmates are ready to be transferred.

Day 7 is the final day for male prisoners' admission but the female inmates' process still keeps going on. There is nothing significant that happens for the female inmates till Day 12.

Days 12-15:

During the days 12-15, female inmates are interviewed for the one last time. There is no interview conducted until the test clearance and medical clearance of offenders are completed.

Interviews are conducted to make sure that every process of offenders is completed and finally, a custody level is recommended for each inmate.
